Adhesives may come from either natural or synthetic sources. Some modern adhesives are extremely strong, and are becoming increasingly important in modern construction and industry.
Over 1,000 different types of natural and synthetic adhesives are used in the manufacture of textiles, plastics, wood products, ceramics, electronics, glass items, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and metals. Over 2.5 million tons of pressure sensitive adhesives (PSAs) are annually produced in the world. The UK adhesives market is estimated to have experienced in excess of 25% growth since 2000, representing particularly strong growth following a period of decline in the mid-late 1990s.
