Platform chemicals

  • The platform chemicals concept is to establish routes from biomass to new and existing petrochemical products.
  • These are the basic building blocks for the basic petrochemical industry, which produces a wide variety of commodity chemicals. These commodity or bulk chemicals, in turn, are used for an even wider array of fine chemicals and polymers.
  • There are two main ways to produce equivalent platform chemicals to those from fossil derived sources: Arriving to the same chemical structure or finding a chemical that can perform the same duties.
  • Advances in biotechnology are enabling the optimization of feedstock composition and agronomic characteristics and the development of new and improved fermentation organisms for conversion of biomass to new end products or intermediates.
  • The hydrogen and carbon containing platform chemicals are either used as solvents (e.g. benzene, toluene), as starting material for polymers (e.g. ethylene, propylene, butadiene) or are further functionalised with elements such as oxygen, nitrogen or chlorine.
  • The production of chemicals from biomass presents higher mass and carbon theoretical efficiency, and it seems an interesting alternative to provide a renewable path for globally and widely demanded platform chemicals like phenols, solvents (Acetone), soft plastic precursor (Polyethylene) and hard plastic precursor (Polypropylene).

Driving school

  • A “driving school” is a business which, for compensation, conducts or offers to conduct instruction in the operation of motor vehicles.
  • A driving school owner which is any person licensed by the department to engage in the business of giving instruction for compensation in the driving of motor vehicles or in the preparation of an applicant for examination for a driver’s license issued by the department.

  • “School for training drivers” means a business conducted by a natural person, association, partnership, corporation or other business entity, for the education of students, in a classroom or motor vehicle, or both, in preparation for the examination for a driver’s license or learner’s permit required by the department to operate a motor vehicle.

A medical store can be started as a sole proprietorship or a partnership and even it can be registered under company law with Securities and Exchange Commission of the country.

The Medical Store Depots were originally established in different parts of the country under the Medical Stores Organization primarily to meet the needs of army units in respect of medicines, surgical equipments and other medical supplies.

The pharma market is growing at 27% annually. Reports peg the market at Rs 33,000 crore (US$ 5 bn). Revenue from pharmacies is expected to touch Rs 50,000 crore by 2010.

The drugstores industry, part of the larger food and staples retailing industry, is a high-volume, low-margin business, with cutthroat competition.

Ferry Service

A ferry (or ferryboat) is a form of transportation, usually a boat, but sometimes a ship, used to carry (or ferry) primarily passengers, and sometimes vehicles and cargo as well, across a body of water.

Ferry designs depend on the length of the route, the passenger or vehicle capacity required, speed requirements and the water conditions.

Water based transport is effective as generally speaking, operating costs of fuel are low and environmental pollution is lower than for corresponding volumes of movement by road, rail or air.

Money is the highest barrier to entry of the ferry business. Historically, government grant programs, such as the $60 million allotted as part of the 2009 Economic Recovery Act, have gone to buy new ferryboats or improve existing ferry terminals.

Tidal Energy



Tidal power, also called tidal energy, is a form of hydropower that converts the energy of tides into useful forms of power - mainly electricity.

The concept of a HYPOGEN (HYdrogen and POwer GENeration) Facility for producing hydrogen and electricity, using fossil fuels as feedstock, with the simultaneous capture and storage of the carbon dioxide produced during the process.
HYPOGEN plants will have to be able to meet the greenhouse gas emission constraints.
The evolution of hydrogen markets can only be projected and modelled as a high risk stream of income for HYPOGEN.

Dried Mango

Dried mango is an important value added product; made by dehydrating mango slices or mango pulp.
Dried mango is made by cutting mango slices and drying those in solar and/or fuel fired dehydrators. Another variation of the product is called mango leather which is made by making mango pulp and drying the pulp.

Flue Gas Desulfurization


  • Flue Gas Desulphurization is widely acknowledged as today’s state-of-the art technology for removing sulfur dioxide from the exhaust flue gas in coal- and oil-fired power plants.
  • Although the FGD process was originally established for environmental purposes, a large amount of high quality, synthetic gypsum is created as a byproduct of the scrubbing process.
  • Wet flue gas desulfurization or scrubber systems are an excellent way of reducing the sulfur dioxide emissions caused by coal combustion boilers.
  • Conventional wet FGD systems are in successful operation at a large number of coal-fired facilities ranging in size from small, individual applications to large utility applications of more than 1000 MW.

Jackfruit-Seed


The seed is 3/4 to 1 1/2 in (2-4 cm) long and 1/2 to 3/4 in (1.25-2 cm) thick and is white and crisp within. There may be 100 or up to 500 seeds in a single fruit.Fresh seeds are considered to be high in starch, low in calcium and iron; good sources of vitamins B1 and B2.

The ripe fruits and seeds of jackfruit are bestowed with certain chemical and aphrodisiac properties (Ferrao, 1999), which are important from health point of view. In addition, its pulp and seeds are being used for cooling, tonic and pectorial purposes in various traditional medicines

Jackfruit seed is used in biscuit factories of Tamil Nadu and is of high demand there. We have made various bakery products using jack seed flour, including cookies and murukku.

Amino Acid

Amino acids are molecules containing an amine group, a carboxylic acid group and a side-chain that varies between different amino acids.

The key elements of an amino acid are carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, and nitrogen. They are particularly important in biochemistry, where the term usually refers to alpha-amino acids.

Amino acids are critical to life, and have many functions in metabolism. One particularly important function is to serve as the building blocks of proteins, which are linear chains of amino acids. Amino acids can be linked together in varying sequences to form a vast variety of proteins.

Twenty-two amino acids are naturally incorporated into polypeptides and are called proteinogenic or standard amino acids. Of these, 20 are encoded by the universal genetic code. Nine standard amino acids are called "essential" for humans because they cannot be created from other compounds by the human body, and so must be taken in as food.

Perfluoromethyl-Vinyl-Ether


Perfluoro(methyl vinyl ether) is a widely known monomer used in the industrial scale, particularly, in the production of fluorine containing rubbers. The known values of copolymerization constants of perfluoro(methyl vinyl ether) (?1) with tetrafluoroethylene2 (?2) are r1 = k11/k12 = 0.22 and r2 = k22/k21 = 1.42 (index 2 concerns tetrafluoroethylene).

Perfluoromethyl vinyl ether as the special fluoric monomer has wide applications in the development of new-style fluoro plastics and fluoro rubber with excellent integrative properties.
There are five main types of FKMs, determined by the types of monomers used to produce the fluoroelastomer. These include Vinylidene Fluoride (VF2), Hexafluoropropylene (HFP), Tetrafluoroethylene (TFE), Perfluoromethylvinylether (PMVE).

Titanium-Oxychloride


Titanium oxychloride is formed in a reaction between titanium chloride (TiCl4) and water.

The mixture of tartaric acid and TiOCl2 solution forms a gel on heating on a water bath which decomposes at higher temperatures, > 423 K.

Mesoporous titania with an average pore diameter of 2.6 nm and pure rutile crystalline structural wall were prepared by hydrolysis of TiOCl2 aqueous solution at lower temperature by using octyl phenol polyethylene oxide as template-directing agent.

Yellow cakes of TiO(OH)2 were dissolved with added HCl solution to form a TiOCl2 solution.

The concentration of titanium in the as- preparedTiOCl2 solutionwas 5.27M, and this was used as a stock solution for synthesis of TiO2.

2-propylheptanol

Propylheptanol is a mixture of isomeric decyl alcohols: 2-propylheptanol, 4-methyl-2-propylhexanol and 5-methyl-2-propylhexanol.

It is a clear and colorless, high boiling liquid with a mild characteristic odor. It is miscible with most common organic solvents but has very low water solubility

2-Propylheptyl alcohol is "oxoalcohol", meaning that it is produced from the hydroformylation ("oxo synthesis") of C9 alkenes followed by hydrogenation of the resulting aldehyde. The production route is similar to that for tripropylene.

Synonyms are 2-Propylheptanol, 2-Propylheptan-1-ol, 1-Heptanol, 2-propyl-, 2-PROPYL-1-HEPTANOL, 2-Propylheptyl alcohol.

Thioester-Antioxidant

Antioxidant is a substance added in small quantities to hydrocarbons which are susceptible to oxidation, such as rubbers, plastics, foods, and oils to inhibit or slow oxidative processes, while being itself oxidized.

There are two basic types of antioxidants: primary and secondary . Primary antioxidants are defined as additives that intercept and stabilize free radicals by donating an active hydrogen atom, gaining their name “radical scavengers”. Secondary antioxidants prevent the further formation of free radicals by decomposing unstable hydroperoxides prior to their homolytic cleavage.

Secondary antioxidants perform better with the incorporation of a primary antioxidant. However, not every type of primary antioxidant can be incorporated with any type of secondary antioxidant.

Antioxidants are employed to retard the degradation of polymers due to air oxidation. Free radicals are initiated by reactions within the polymer brought-on by heat, ultraviolet radiation, mechanical shear or metallic impurities

DLTDP, DTTDP and DSTDP are all produced by reacting the same intermediate, thiodipropionitrile (TDPN), with different fatty alcohols. DLTDP uses lauryl alcohol, DTTDP uses iso-tridecyl alcohol and DSTDP uses stearyl alcohol.

Diethyl-Phenyl-Acetamide

Diethyl Ethyl Acetamide is a multi-insect repellent. It is effective against mosquitoes, leaches and other blood sucking organisms. It is found to be much more superior and effective as compared to the commonly used mosquito repellents like Di-methyl phthalate.

DEPA can be used in the form of cream or as a spray, liquid or aerosol.

A non-toxic, non-irritant, cosmetically acceptable, cost effective indigenously available multi-insect repellent N,N- dimethylphenyl acetamide (DEPA) has been developed and licensed by Drug Controller of India for manufacture for use on human beings and has since been introduced in services.

Defence Services have already accepted DEPA as their mosquito repellent. Other para military organisations are in the process of taking this product.

Cellphone Recycling

A cell phone is made up of many materials. In general, the handset consists of 40 percentmetals, 40 percent plastics, and 20 percentceramics and trace materials.

Mobile phones are relatively inexpensive, and smaller every day. However, it is plastic it takes thousands of years to degrade, and toxic metals such as arsenic, antimony, Beryllium, cadmium,
copper, lead, nickel and zinc, that accumulate in living organisms and can cause cancer and neurological diseases.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates that 130 million cell phones are discarded each year. When dismantled, their internal metal components translate into 65,000 tons of waste containing lead, cadmium, arsenic, beryllium, mercury and other toxic heavy metals and carcinogens.

The facts are that 280 tonnes of mobile phones, batteries and accessories have been collected for recycling by the industry, saving the environment from potential damage. This equates to 1.1 million batteries and 435,000 handsets having been collected.

Organic acids

  • An organic acid is an organic compound with acidic properties.
  • The most common Organic acids are the carboxylic acids, whose acidity is associated with their carboxyl group –COOH. Sulfonic acids, containing the group –SO2OH, are relatively stronger acids.
  • The relative stability of the conjugate base of the acid determines its acidity.
  • Other groups can also confer acidity, usually weakly: –OH, –SH, the enol group, and the phenol group.
  • In biological systems, organic compounds containing these groups are generally referred to as Organic acids.
  • Simple Organic acids like formic or acetic acids are used for oil and gas well stimulation treatments. These Organic acids are much less reactive with metals than are strong mineral acids like hydrochloric acid (HCl) or mixtures of HCl and hydrofluoric acid (HF).

Power less!

MSEs (Micro and Small Enterprises) are the most powerless lot in the Industrial scenario today.

  1. They have no bargaining power with the Bankers for getting finance. 
  2. They have no bargaining power to get better rates and better deal with the suppliers
  3. They have no bargaining power with their customers particularly with the Big Brothers.
  4. They have no POWER ( I mean the electric Power) 
To-day every Micro and Small Units are under going a severe power cut. On an average they are suffering for more than 7-8 hours a day. That means they work only 3-4 hours per day if it is a single shift unit. If it is working for 2 shifts then they may have 8 hours production. That means only 50% capacity utilization. 

Whereas they have to pay the Rent for the building - 100% 
They have to pay the Wages to their Workers - 100%
They have to pay the interest to the Bankers - 100%
They have to keep the delivery schedule and deliver the ordered goods - 100%

How is it possible?  Does our Politicians and Officials hear the frantic cry of this neglected people? Is there any one to rescue this poor lot!

MSE's call for Fair Play

Right from the Prime Minister, FM, MSME minister, CMs and every officer in this country will pay floral tributes to Micro and Small Industries and their contribution to the Economy. But, when it comes to serving these Micro and Small enterprises, every one is doing only a lip service particularly in offering credit and other finance related services.
When a leading air line company is not able to pay back it debts amounting to several thousand crores SBI the lead bank comes forward to convert it into Equity. Whereas a small Micro unit having borrowed a few lakh rupees is not able to repay it and asking for the reschedule, the banks apply SARFAESI and take over the little assets and auction it. They are not even prepared to listen the grievances of the Entrepreneur.

Every banker is saying that Entrepreneur themselves are not interested in availing loan under CGTMSE stating that they need to pay 1% more as Insurance premium and they are ready to offer collateral security. But, unfortunately, these bankers do not educate the Entrepreneur that they have to shell out thousands of rupees as fees to the Engineer and Advocate for getting the valuation certificates, Legal opinion and over and above that they have to pay 0.5% as Stamp duty for registering the deposit of title deeds with the bank and registration charges and other expenses at the Registrar office.

Regarding rate of interest, any amount of our representation to the authorities did not yield any response. Cost of Finance is one of the major input for a MSE. Let us hope at least our recommendation for interest subsidy is granted by the Tamilnadu Government.

Fatty Acid

Fatty acid is a carboxylic acid with a long unbranched aliphatic tail (chain), which is either saturated or unsaturated.

Fatty acids are merely carboxylic acids with long hydrocarbon chains. The hydrocarbon chain length may vary from 10-30 carbons.

Fatty acid demand is expected to continue to be strong , fuelled by growth in consumer products such as cosmetics and plastics. Prices of fatty acids in Asia are dependent on feedstock palm kernel, palm stearin and crude palm oil prices and tend to follow the price trends of these raw materials.

The rubber industry consumes large quantities of fatty acids. Mostly, saturated fatty acids are used as activators, accelerators and softening agents.

The textile industry uses fairly large quantities of fatty acids, largely in the form of derivatives. Because of the diversity of the industry and the numerous forms in which fatty acids

Tall Oil

Tall oil, also called "liquid rosin" or tallol, is a viscous yellow-black odorous liquid obtained as a by-product of the Kraft process of wood pulp manufacture when pulping mainly coniferous trees.

The tall oil rosin finds use as a component of adhesives, rubbers, and inks, and as an emulsifier. The pitch is used as a binder in cement, an adhesive, and an emulsifier for asphalt.

The demand is for the tall oil rosin and fatty acids which are used to produce adhesives, coatings, and ink resins. The products find use in lubricants, soaps, linoleum, flotation and waterproofing agents, paints, varnishes, and drying oils.

Demand for tall oil fatty acids (TOFA) and TOFA derivatives, as well as tall oil rosin-based resins are said to be picking up, mostly because of improved economic activity.

Soymilk

  • Soy milk is actually made from soybeans, a type of vegetable. It has been used for centuries by the Chinese and Japanese people in making their staple food which is the tofu.
  • Soy milk (also called soya milk, soymilk, soybean milk, or soy juice, although some do not believe soy to be a milk) and sometimes referred to as soy drink/beverage is a beverage made from soybeans.
  • Plain soy milk is unsweetened, although some soy milk products are sweetened. Salted soy milk is prevalent in China.
  • Soy milk has about the same amount of protein (though not the same amino acid profile) as cow's milk.
  • Natural soy milk contains little digestible calcium as it is bound to the bean's pulp, which is insoluble in humans.
  • Soy products contain sucrose as the basic disaccharide, which breaks down into glucose and fructose.

Tannic Acid


Tannic acid is a specific commercial form of tannin, a type of polyphenol. Its weak acidity (pKa around 10) is due to these phenol groups in the structure. Tannic acid (TAN-ik AS-id) is a pale yellow amorphous powder, shiny scales, or spongy material that gradually darkens when exposed to air. It is odorless but has a strong, bitter taste.
Tannic acid is used in the conservation of ferrous (iron based) metal objects to passivate and inhibit corrosion. Tannic acid is also used to produce tannate salts of certain anti-histamins and anti-tussives to impart increased stability or slow release properties to the API (active pharmaceutical ingredient).
