Recycling Of Plastics

Plastics are an essential part to our daily life. For instance, without plastics, 400 percent more material by weight, and 200 percent more material by volume would be needed to make packaging. The recycling of plastics continued to grow in 1997. More than 1.3 billion pounds of post-consumer plastics packaging were recycled in the United States.

Feldspar

The feldspars are by far the most abundant group of minerals and are found in igneous, metamorphic and many sedimentary rocks. Felsdpars are framework silicates where each silica tetrahedra share all corners with its four neighbouring tetrahedra. World feldspar consumption totalled 13.9 million tonnes and is growing on average 2% per annum. Turkey is the leading exporter, accounting for 33% of all exports by quantity, while Italy and the USA remain the leading importers. In Asia production of feldspar is worth over US$180 million.

Kaolin

Kaolin has a range of industrial applications, which are grouped in three main market areas; paper, ceramics and performance minerals. Demand is dominated by the paper industry, which accounts for about 70% of total sales. Japan is outstandingly important in use of high value kaolins, and around 85% of this is used in the papermaking industry in Japan. Fibreglass manufacturing in Taiwan has been also a very important consumer of imported kaolin, and it is only now that this is being stemmed, mainly by re-location of several major fibreglass producers to China.

Filler Minerals

Mineral fillers make up less than 6 percent of the hot mix asphalt concrete by mass, and generally less than about 3 percent. A typical mineral filler completely passes a 0.060 mm (No. 30) sieve, with at least 65 percent of the particles passing the 0.075 mm sieve. Dry-ground calcium carbonates are among the least expensive white fillers available. Wet-ground products are produced in finer particle size ranges. Wet-ground fine and ultrafine products are also sold in 75% solids slurry form for highvolume paint and paper applications.Calcium carbonate is also the most widely used filler in adhesives and sealants.

Wood Flooring

Wood flooring is available in different patterns. The most popular are planks and parquet.Planks can be purchased in uniform or random lengths, in a variety of widths, and with pegs or butterfly keys. The parquet pieces are put togetherinto squares and cut into a geometric design, making the parquet effect. Hardwood flooring makes an excellent flooring choice. It’s a durable material, available in a vast range of species and colors.Unlike other flooring types, hardwood flooring is easy to maintain and provides a healthy, hypoallergenic environment, and is a recyclable product. Wood Flooring in the U.S., indicates that the market will continue growing at a compoundannual rate of 7% from 2006 to 2010, bringing the demand for wood flooring at the end of the decade to more than $3 billion.

Indigo

Indigo is among the oldest dyes to be used for textile dyeing and printing. Many Asian countries, such as India, China, and Japan, have used indigo as a dye for centuries. The dye was also known to ancient civilizations in Egypt, Greece, Rome, Britain, Peru, and Africa.World consumption of indigo in the 1800s was very large indeed, so in 1866 a German chemist named Adolph von Baeyer began his studies of the pigment and eventually elucidated its chemical structure so that it could be synthesized commercially. At the end of the 19th century, Germany was able to produce synthetic indigotine cheaper than the natural dyestuff, and thus Germany then took charge of supplying indigo.

Teniposide

Teniposide is a cancer (antineoplastic) medication. Teniposide interferes with the growth of cancer cells and slows their growth and spread in the body. Teniposide produces its anti-cancer effects by inhibiting an enzyme, topoisomerase, which is responsible for maintaining structural function and integrity of DNA. By inhibiting the normal activity of topoisomerase, teniposide inhibits proper DNA synthesis, ultimately causing cellular death.

Ethylene diamine is a strongly alkaline, colorless to yellowish liquid, with ammonia-like odor, completely miscible with water and soluble in alcohol. It is widely used as a building block for polymers and as a ligand for coordination compounds. Ethylenediamines are produced by the reaction of aqueous ammonia with 1,2-dichloroethane. Ethylene diamine is used in large quantities for production of many industrial chemicals. The principal hazards that arise in working with ethylenediamine (EDA) are those associated with similar organic amines; namely, a corrosive action on skin and eyes.

The silica in the ash undergoesstructural transformations depending on the conditions (time, temperature etc) of combustion. At550°C – 800°C amorphous ash is formed and at temperatures greater than this, crystalline ash isformed. These types of silica have different properties and it is important to produce ash of thecorrect specification for the particular end use.

Chlorosilanes

Chlorosilanes are a group of reactive, chlorine-containing chemical compounds, related to silane and used in many chemical processes. Each such chemical has at least one silicon-chlorine bond. Chlorosilanes are intermediates used to manufacture siloxanes and silanes – the building blocks for many silicone products. Chlorosilanes are therefore not found in final applications. Organic chlorosilanes are frequently used as coatings for silicon and glass surfaces, and in the production of silicone (polysiloxane) polymers. While phenyl chlorosilanes and many others can be used, methylsiloxanes are produced in the greatest quantities.

Nitrous oxide

Nitrous oxide is most commonly made by fusing and "boiling" ammonium nitrate to form steam, nitrous oxide, nitrogen, ammonium nitrate 'fog' and small amounts of very toxic higher oxides of nitrogen. Nitrous oxide drug is often mislabeled as an 'inhalant', implying it bears a relation to substances such as glue, gasoline, or aerosol sprays. The drug currently (as of 2005) enjoys moderate popularity in some countries. It was often sold at Grateful Dead and Phish concerts. N2O is widely used clinically because of its good analgesic properties; however, it is a relatively weak anesthetic, requiring high volume percent and hyperbaric conditions to achieve the minimal alveolar concentration for anesthesia

Surgical Sutures

Sutures are designed to help the healing of the body by closely opposing the two sides of a wound to minimize scar formation or to prevent leaking blood, like in vessels.Absorbable sutures are made of materials which are broken down in tissue after a given period of time, which depending on the suture can be from ten days to four weeks. They are used therefore in many of the inner tissues of the body. The major part of the absorbable sutures used are now made of synthetic polymer fibers, which may be braided or monofilament; these offer numerous advantages over gut sutures, notably ease of handling, low cost, low tissue reaction, consistent performance and guaranteed non-toxicity.

Salt

Salt is necessary for the survival of all living creatures, including humans.Salt is required for life, but overconsumption can increase the risk of health problems.SSP can supply complete plant for salt refining and drying to produce iodised, free flowing salt from crude salt. The crude salt costs Rs.300-400 (US$ 7-8) per Ton and after refining and packing the salt is sold at Rs.4.00 to Rs.5.00 (US$ 0.1) per kg.This is a very profitable project, but it needs a relatively bigger initial investment. The recovery from crude salt to free flowing salt is nearly 85-90%.
